CAIRO – 30 October 2024: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has commented on recent complaints surrounding demolition activities at the Imam Al-Shafie cemetery, a heritage site in the heart of Cairo, emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding valuable structures.

Social media images depicting the partial demolition of a historic dome in the Imam Al-Shafie cemetery area have elicited widespread anger and dismay throughout Egypt, given the historical significance of these graves, some dating back over a century.

Speaking at a press conference in the New Administrative Capital on Wednesday, Madbouly underscored the state's unwavering dedication to preserving Egypt's heritage and monuments, integral components of the nation's identity.

Madbouly added, “any actions involving misunderstandings or violations are being addressed and rectified. We assure you that it will not recur in the future.”

He confirmed issuing immediate directives to relevant ministries to cease these actions, emphasizing the protection of the country's heritage structures from harm.

Following Minister of Culture Ahmed Hanno's instructions, Egyptian authorities reportedly halted the demolition activities at the cemetery area last week, part of ongoing state development initiatives in recent years.

Authorities have initiated a reassessment of development plans in the area to uphold the preservation of urban and historical heritage.

The cemetery holds immense cultural significance, featuring domes and mausoleums of prominent Egyptian figures, including members of the family of Ottoman ruler of Egypt Muhammad Ali.
