CAIRO – 28 October 2024: The ongoing conflict in Sudan has taken a significant turn as several commanders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have defected to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). This development has raised hopes for a potential shift in the balance of power, but the overall humanitarian situation in the country remains dire.

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to discuss the crisis in Sudan, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres expected to present a report outlining the deteriorating conditions. While Guterres is not anticipated to recommend the immediate deployment of a peacekeeping force, he is likely to call for increased international efforts to protect civilians and deliver humanitarian aid.

The RSF has been accused of committing widespread atrocities, including killings, sexual violence, and looting, particularly in the Gezira state. The UN has condemned these actions in the strongest terms and called for an immediate end to the violence.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with millions of people in need of urgent assistance. The conflict has disrupted essential services, displaced countless civilians, and led to a severe shortage of food and medical supplies.

As the situation in Sudan remains volatile, the international community is closely monitoring developments and urging the warring parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
