CAIRO – 22 October 2024: Egypt has made history by successfully eradicating malaria, a disease that has plagued the country since ancient times. The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified Egypt as malaria-free, marking a significant milestone in global health.

The achievement is the result of decades of concerted efforts by the Egyptian government and health authorities. By implementing comprehensive control measures and mobilizing communities, Egypt has managed to interrupt the transmission of malaria within its borders.

Egypt's success in eradicating malaria is a beacon of hope for other countries struggling to control the disease. The country's experience demonstrates that with sufficient political will, resources, and technical expertise, malaria can be eliminated.

While Egypt has succeeded in eradicating malaria, the disease remains a significant public health challenge in many tropical and subtropical regions. In 2022 alone, an estimated 249 million malaria cases were recorded globally.

The WHO has commended Egypt for its leadership in global health and its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The organization has highlighted Egypt's success as an example for other countries in the region and beyond.
