CAIRO – 21 October 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdel Aty stressed Monday to UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg Egypt's keenness on the country's unity, territorial integrity, safety and independence of its state institutions given its importance to national security and navigation in the Red Sea.

In that context, the minister expressed Egypt's support to efforts aimed at accomplishing a comprehensive political solution to the crisis and ending the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people. Working towards that goal, Minister Abdel Aty noted the importance of abiding by UNSC resolution no. 2261 concerned with imposing a targeted arms embargo against individuals and entities designated by a certain committee. He also expressed support to the legitimate government in Yemen.

The minister highlighted that Egypt hosts one million displaced Yemenis, and that it had been providing aid consisting of food and medical supplies.

In a related context, Minister Abdel Aty underscored the salience of ensuring the security of navigation in the Red Sea, underlining its association with Egypt's national security. He equally pointed out the plunge in Suez Canal revenues due to tensions in the Red Sea.

The Egyptian minister asserted the cruciality of adopting a comprehensive de-escalation approach in the region, saying that the beginning should be with a ceasefire in Gaza Strip and Lebanon, then pressure by major international players for a final settlement to internal divisions in Yemen, where more rescue and humanitarian aid must be mobilized.
