Egypt has implemented 400 projects in Nile Basin countries: Water Minister

CAIRO – 17 October 2024: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sweilem, stated that Egypt has implemented 400 projects in Nile Basin countries, funded by Egypt.

 

 

The Minister’s remarks were given to the Cabinet Information Center. He noted that these Egypt-funded initiatives include water harvesting projects, well drilling, drinking water stations, rain forecasting centers, and dams. However, the Minister did not disclose the timeline for the completion of these projects.

 

 

Sweilem underscored that these efforts reflect Egypt's genuine commitment to collaborating with Nile Basin countries, as their destinies are intertwined.

 

 

The Minister also participated in the Water Investment Forum between Egypt and the European Union, part of the Seventh Cairo Water Week. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of this event in addressing global challenges in water management. He stressed the importance of effective management of transboundary waters and the need for cooperative, sustainable solutions that benefit all riparian countries.

 

 

The Egyptian Cabinet adopted Wednesday an action plan to create a mechanism to fund studies, implement developmental projects and infrastructure in Nile Basin countries in fulfillment of the directives of President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi.

 

 

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the move is within Egypt's plan to devise a developmental strategy in Africa to keep up with accelerating variables taking place on the continent and in the entire world.

 

 

The prime minister noted Egypt's eagerness for strengthening its ties with African countries, especially Nile Basin ones, as they represent a strategic depth to the country. 

 

 

Madbouly underscored keenness on accomplishing economic and developmental integration with Nile Basin countries, supporting them to achieve comprehensive development, and activating multilateral partnerships.
