PROFILE: Sisi appoints Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek as new president of Cairo University

CAIRO – 17 October 2024: Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek, a distinguished law professor and academic leader, has been appointed as the President of Cairo University, following a decree by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, announced the decree on Thursday.

Abdel Sadek has been serving as acting president of the university over the recent months, succeeding Mohamed Othman El-Khosht, who reached the state pension age after leading the university for seven years from 2017 until the end of July 2024.

PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY

Abdel Sadek is a professor at the Faculty of Law in Cairo University.

He served as vice president of the university for community service and environmental development by virtue of Presidential Decree 41/2020.

He has also worked as the legal advisor to the Supreme Council of Universities under a decree issued in 2023.

Abdel Sadek was previously appointed as an assistant administrative prosecutor by a presidential decree in 1995, but he decided to pursue an academic career and work in the university sector.

He progressed in academic positions and held several administrative roles, including serving as the director of the English language study department at the Faculty of Law, Cairo University for the years 2015-2017.

He also served as the director of Cairo University's Open Education Center in 2017/2018. He chaired the university’s discipline committee and the high committee for the preservation and protection of university properties.

ACCOLADES

Abdel-Sadek has received numerous scientific and community awards, including the ideal student award at the Faculty of Law in 1993, the Sanhoury award in comparative civil law, the National Center for Social and Criminological Research award for the best research in the human rights field, and the most influential personality Award in the activities of the country’s drug control fund in Giza.
