CAIRO – 17 October 2024: A Spanish newspaper highlighted the recent visit of Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares to Egypt, where he met with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr. Badr Abdel Atty. The paper emphasized that Egypt and Spain play pivotal roles in promoting peace across the Middle East.
During the visit, the two ministers held a joint press conference, discussing the ongoing war in Palestine, the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the strong bilateral relations between Spain and Egypt. Albares described Egypt as a "first-class ally."
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also received Albares and his delegation, along with Dr. Badr Abdel Atty, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, and the Spanish Ambassador in Cairo. The discussions focused on the latest developments in the region, particularly the positive stance Spain has taken on Middle Eastern issues, most notably the Palestinian cause.
The Egyptian Presidential Spokesman stated that President El-Sisi appreciated Spain's constructive position on regional matters, reflected in the continuous coordination between the leadership of both countries and their shared vision for achieving peace in the region.
Minister Albares conveyed the greetings and appreciation of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to President El-Sisi, expressing Spain’s full support for Egypt's tireless efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. He emphasized Egypt's crucial regional role in preventing the escalation of conflict and advancing peace and stability.
Both sides agreed on the need to increase international efforts to halt the ongoing escalation in Gaza and Lebanon, aiming for a comprehensive de-escalation that would prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. This would pave the way toward a peace process based on the two-state solution.
The meeting also underscored the depth of the bilateral relationship between Egypt and Spain, with both countries expressing a commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly in economic and investment sectors. Spain highlighted its eagerness to contribute to Egypt's development process, with Spanish companies playing active roles in various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation, benefiting both Egyptian and Spanish citizens.
