CAIRO- 12 October 2024: The State-owned Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) will launch the National Survey of International Migration in Egypt next Monday during a conference sponsored by Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation.
The event will be attended by several concerned ministers and representatives from international and regional organizations.
This survey is being conducted in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and in collaboration with various international bodies, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Bank, with funding from the European Union.
The implementation of this survey reflects European interest in the issue of international migration. The Statistical Committee of the European Union (Eurostat) has initiated a project to monitor migration from Mediterranean countries to EU countries through specialized surveys.
As part of its efforts to produce accurate statistics and address data gaps related to this phenomenon, Egypt will be the first country to conduct this survey. It aims to provide detailed data on migrant characteristics, motivations, timing, outcomes, determinants, and trends, whether concerning migration from Egypt or the return of migrants.
Additionally, the survey will identify the factors related to external migration, return migration, reasons for migration, and forced migration within Egypt.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt has hosted about 9 million migrants over the past few years.
In his speech at the launch of the fourth National Action Plan to Combat and Prevent Illegal Migration (2024-2026), Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Egypt has made significant strides in combating illegal migration.
The minister highlighted that no illegal vessels have departed from Egypt's shores since 2016, a testament to the effectiveness of the country's anti-smuggling measures.
