CAIRO – 10 October 2024: Egypt has made significant strides in combating illegal migration, according to Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Atty. Speaking at the launch of the fourth National Action Plan to Combat and Prevent Illegal Migration (2024-2026), the minister attributed this success to the coordinated efforts of various national agencies.

The minister highlighted that no illegal vessels have departed from Egypt's shores since 2016, a testament to the effectiveness of the country's anti-smuggling measures.

The new action plan, developed by the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking, builds upon the previous ten-year strategy and aims to further strengthen Egypt's efforts in this area.

Dr. Abdel-Atty emphasized the Foreign Ministry's commitment to the issue of migration, noting the inclusion of migration and the affairs of Egyptians abroad under the ministry's purview. He highlighted the ministry's various initiatives, including consular services, multilateral negotiations, and bilateral agreements, aimed at addressing the root causes of illegal migration and promoting safe migration pathways.

The minister also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating illegal migration, citing Egypt's partnership with the European Union and its commitment to international agreements such as the Palermo Protocol and the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

Egypt has been proactive in addressing the challenges posed by increased migration flows due to regional conflicts, providing a safe and stable environment for migrants and refugees.

The Foreign Minister expressed gratitude to all national and international partners for their contributions to this cause.
