CAIRO – 8 October 2024: According to the official spokesperson of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, the Mexican Foreign Minister expressed deep regret over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the Egyptian government and the victims' families.
He assured that the investigation is ongoing, and the results will be promptly shared with Egyptian authorities once completed.
Minister Abdel Aty requested the Mexican government expedite the investigation and complete the necessary procedures to allow for the repatriation of the victims' bodies.
He also emphasized the need for proper medical care for the injured. Abdel Aty directed the Egyptian ambassador in Mexico to travel to the city where the incident occurred, located approximately 850 kilometers from the Mexican capital, to oversee the repatriation process and attend to the injured victims' needs.
In addition to discussing the incident, the two foreign ministers touched on the importance of enhancing bilateral relations between Egypt and Mexico. Abdel Aty highlighted the need to boost trade and investment cooperation and explore new areas of collaboration, given the potential both countries possess.
The conversation also covered Egypt's nomination of Dr. Khaled El-Anany for the position of Director-General of UNESCO. The Mexican Foreign Minister praised El-Anany's capabilities and acknowledged Egypt's strong candidacy for the position.
