Egyptian parliament starts fifth legislative term, elects heads of committees

CAIRO – 2 October 2024: The House of Representatives has started its fifth legislative term, chaired by Speaker Hanafi Gebali, to announce the formations of specialized committees.

The House selected of 25 committee chairpersons, 50 deputies with 2 for each committee, and 25 secretaries.

The House committees focus on drafting and discussing crucial draft laws profoundly impacting the lives of citizens.

These committees are the legislative; defense and national security; human rights; communications and information technology; energy and environment; African affairs; youth and sports; agriculture; housing; social solidarity; economic affairs, planning and budget; industry; medium, small and micro projects; transportation; foreign affairs; culture, media and antiquities; tourism and civil aviation; health affairs; religious affairs and endowments; manpower; complaints and proposals; education and scientific research; Arab affairs; and local administration.

During the inaugural session of the House, Gebali said the parliament will strive diligently to strengthen the bonds of cooperation with the government, in order to achieve the highest interests of the nation.

He underlined the parliament’s commitment to fruitful and constructive cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of the state as the real guarantee to advance development.

“I say to the Egyptian citizen: We are here for you, and we pledge to exert our utmost efforts, with sincerity and dedication, for the prosperity of our nation and the progress of our people,” Gebali emphasized.

The Senate also commenced the fifth term of its current legislative session, chaired by Speaker Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek.

The regular term, which started in October, will last for at least nine months.

This week, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in accordance with his constitutional powers, has asked the House of Representatives to convene Tuesday to begin its fifth session of the second legislative term.

The president also asked the Senate to convene on Wednesday to open the fifth session of the first legislative term.
