CAIRO – 2 October 2024: Politicians and MPs have emphasized the significance of the recent National Dialogue Board of Trustees meeting, which highlighted the need to tackle both regional and local issues. They believe this demonstrates the Dialogue’s role in representing the voice of Egyptians and its importance as a platform to address pressing challenges. The discussion on welfare reform, including setting up a plan to comprehensively address it, shows a commitment to ensuring citizens' welfare.

Journalist Gamal Al-Kashki, a member of the National Dialogue Board, stated that the urgent session on Saturday aims to arrange specialized discussions on current regional events and their impact on both the region and Egypt. He mentioned the importance of considering Egypt’s position in an unstable region, particularly with the ongoing Israeli aggression against Palestine and Lebanon. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has stressed the importance of addressing national security and foreign policy as key topics in the dialogue.

Al-Kashki highlighted the pivotal role Egypt has played in supporting the Palestinian cause, maintaining that Egypt’s efforts are crucial to preserving regional stability. He reiterated that recognizing the Palestinian state is the only solution to achieving peace.

Regarding welfare reform, Al-Kashki noted that the National Dialogue will address it in phases, covering all aspects of the issue. Sessions will alternate between general public discussions and specialized sessions, ensuring thorough examination before presenting outcomes. He emphasized that the dialogue’s goal is to develop a scientifically accurate and citizen-centric approach to welfare reform, which will be discussed openly to reassure the public of the government’s commitment to their well-being.

Dr. Basel Adel, leader of the Dialogue Bloc, pointed out that the upcoming discussions signal a shift in focus for the National Dialogue, with a broader examination of national security and foreign policy challenges. These were initially not open for discussion in the early stages of the dialogue. Adel stressed the importance of addressing external threats and regional conflicts, including those in Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan, and Somalia. He underscored the importance of these discussions in reflecting the Egyptian people's stance against Israeli aggression and violations of international law.

Adel also mentioned that welfare reform, long decided behind closed doors, will now be open to public debate, covering both financial and political implications. The reform is essential, given that 62% of Egyptians live below the poverty line, and the country’s budget is under strain due to economic pressures.

Major General Dr. Reda Farhat, Deputy Chairman of the Conference Party and a political science expert, noted that the National Dialogue is a vital platform to discuss sensitive national and regional issues, especially in light of the increasing regional challenges. He emphasized that the dialogue promotes social cohesion and public awareness while addressing key topics such as welfare reform and national security. Farhat believes the discussions will lead to sustainable solutions, benefiting the nation and reinforcing Egypt’s national security.

He stressed that the emergency session scheduled for Saturday will focus on developing a clear national vision that aligns with Egypt’s unwavering stance on national interests. He also praised the dialogue’s methodology, which ensures the involvement of all societal forces in decision-making.

Farhat pointed out that the dialogue's comprehensive approach to welfare reform considers the economic, social, and security dimensions of the issue. He emphasized that the public sessions provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to contribute to the discussion, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most without harming the economy.

Farhat also highlighted the urgency of addressing regional and national security challenges, noting that Egypt’s strategic position makes it critical to safeguard national interests amid rising regional tensions. The dialogue aims to foster internal and external stability, making it an essential tool for defending Egypt’s status in the region.

MP Ahmed Saad Nuyser praised the National Dialogue for its proactive approach in addressing pressing issues, especially concerning national security and foreign policy. He emphasized that these discussions strengthen Egypt's ability to navigate ongoing regional conflicts, which pose a direct threat to the nation’s security.

Nuyser also highlighted the planned public sessions on welfare reform, which will engage all segments of Egyptian society. These discussions aim to create a balanced strategy that considers both the financial and social impacts of welfare policies.

Nuyser urged all stakeholders to actively participate in these discussions, emphasizing that the National Dialogue is a critical tool for stability and development in both Egypt and the region. The dialogue’s agenda reflects the government's commitment to addressing key issues affecting Egyptians, providing a platform for constructive debate and policy formation that directly benefits citizens.
