CAIRO – 30 September 2024: Egypt welcomed the agreement between the Libyan House of Representatives and the State Council, facilitated by the Acting Head of the United Nations Mission in Libya, to address the Central Bank of Libya crisis.

Both sides agreed to appoint Naji Mohamed Issa Belqasem as the governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

In a press release, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that Egypt expressed hope that this positive development will provide the necessary momentum for efforts to achieve stability across Libya.

Egypt reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting these efforts in coordination with regional and international partners, aiming to uphold the capabilities of the Libyan people and fulfill their aspirations.

Libya has recently gone through a crisis of appointing a new governor of the Central Bank of Libya between the Tobruk-based government led by Khalifa Haftar and Tripoli-based government of Dabiba . As a results, oil productions in Libya have been suspended and caused disturbance in the global market and led to the increase of the oil prices globally. However, the UN hosted several meetings and held a series of discussions to reach an agreement between the two rivals.
