CAIRO - 18 September 2024: A statement from the British Embassy in Cairo Wednesday said that Egypt is a key partner for the United Kingdom in combating climate change, especially after the COP27 climate conference, where the Green Partnership Agreement was concluded between the two countries.

The UK supports Egypt’s green transformation through a portfolio worth more than $240 million in grants, investments and technical assistance, including $105 million through the Green Climate Fund, $43 million through the Global Environment Facility, and $25 million through the Climate Investment Fund towards sustainable urban infrastructure.

It also includes $7 million for the Water, Food and Energy Nexus Program in Egypt, $20 million to support the energy transition, $4.5 million to support the use of solar panels among small industrial companies, and $1.2 million to the Egyptian private sector through the UK Climate Finance Accelerator Program.

The UK is also investing $9 million to support Egypt’s first commercial green hydrogen plant in Ain Sokhna, as part of a broader $63 million investment.

The UK is working with the Egyptian government to significantly increase green investments in Egypt.

In his first major speech as UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy focused foreign policy attention on the climate crisis, stressing that climate change is at the heart of geopolitics. He stressed that the climate and nature crisis is the defining challenge of our time, but pointed to the unparalleled economic opportunities offered by the energy transition.

The Foreign Secretary also expressed his commitment to making the Global Clean Energy Alliance – a new coalition committed to accelerating the global clean energy transition – a reality, working in partnership with developed and developing countries to make the rapid deployment of renewable energy a global priority, according to a statement from the British Embassy today.
