CAIRO – 18 September 2024: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has denounced the recent “sinful” assassination attempt on Comoros President Azali Assoumani, affirming Egypt's unwavering support for the security and stability of Comoros.
In a phone call on Wednesday, Sisi inquired about Assoumani's well-being following the attempt on his life last week.
Assoumani expressed gratitude for Sisi's concern, praising Egypt's consistent backing of Comoros' security and stability as a testament to the strong ties between the two nations.
Both leaders reiterated their mutual dedication to enhancing bilateral relations, taking into account the increasing cooperation and Egypt's role in bolstering development initiatives and capacity building in Comoros.
On Friday, Assoumani was stabbed during a funeral for a religious leader near Moroni, sustaining minor injuries to his hand, according to reports.
The suspect, a 24-year-old policeman, was apprehended but was later discovered dead in his jail cell on Saturday.
Investigations are ongoing, with the motive behind the attack yet to be determined.
Assoumani, who has served as president multiple times since 2002, secured his fourth term with 63 percent of the vote in the January 2024 elections, amid angry opposition protests.
