CAIRO – 17 September 2024: Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó led Tuesday a delegation in talks with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty in Cairo as the two sides signed an MoU on cooperation between the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and Paks-2, which are both under-construction and built by Rosatom.
Minister Abdelatty stressed in the meeting - held one day after the conclusion of his visit to Moscow – the importance of consolidating political ties and consultations. In that context, he thanked Hungary for supporting Egypt on different matters.
On another level, the minister showcased the importance of holding the Egyptian-Hungarian Business Forum regularly, in order to push forward cooperation in the sectors of energy, manufacturing, tourism, production of vaccines and medical equipment, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. That is in addition to partnering up in projects in Africa.
The fourth forum's session took place in Budapest in 2023, while the fifth will be held in Cairo in March 2025.
The meeting also tackled the Israeli aggression against Gaza Strip and the West Bank as well as Egyptian efforts to broker a ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery so as Minister Abdelatty said that Israel had to stop targeting civilians, infrastructure, and UN shelters.
The two ministers also discussed the escalation on the Lebanese-Israeli borders, and the Egyptian endeavors to inhibit escalation to preserve the region's stability. The talks also tackled the crises in Sudan, Libya, Syria and the Red Sea, in addition to Egypt's water security threatened by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
On that front, Minister Abdelatty underscored the salience of a legally binding agreement on the hydropower project's filling and operation, rejecting unilateral measures and harm to downstream countries.
