CAIRO – 14 September 2024: Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel and Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty visited the Eritrean capital, Asmara, where they engaged in discussions with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki concerning regional developments.

During the meeting on Saturday, both parties emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts and maintaining ongoing consultations to achieve stability in Sudan and support its national institutions, as well as to uphold the unity and sovereignty of Somalia over its entire territory, said a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

The foreign minister and intelligence chief conveyed a message from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to his Eritrean counterpart, addressing methods to bolster relations between the two countries across various domains. The message also tackled political and security developments in the region.

Kamel and Abdelatty were briefed on President Afwerki’s perspective regarding developments in the Red Sea, in light of the necessity of creating favorable conditions to restore the natural flow of maritime navigation and international trade through the Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

They further deliberated on advancements in the African Horn region, along with the challenges confronting the area and strategies to enhance regional security and stability.

Egypt has consistently voiced unwavering support for the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia amidst tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over an agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a self-declared state not recognized by Egypt, to grant Addis Ababa access to a port in January.
