CAIRO – 13 September 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty received a phone call from UN Secretary General António Guterres on Friday, discussing the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the dangerous escalation in the West Bank.
In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said Abdelatty and Guterres underlined the importance of reaching an immediate ceasefire and allowing the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave, as well as facilitating the work of the staff of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA.
Abdelatty briefed Guterres on Egypt's stance that emphasizes the need to stop the Israeli aggression and quickly delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza's residents.
The foreign minister stated that regional peace, security and stability could not be achieved without establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On his part, the UN secretary general commended the mediation efforts made by Egypt, Qatar and the US to secure a ceasefire deal in Gaza and exchange Israeli hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian detainees, expressing hope for striking such agreement as soon as possible.
