Egyptian, Turkish presidents exchange views on ending internal conflicts in Middle East, disputes in Horn of Africa

CAIRO – 4 September 2024: In his speech during his visit to Ankara, President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi said he had discussed with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, and exchanged views on ending the internal conflict in Libya by holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Egyptian and Turkish presidents also conferred over accomplishing political solutions in Syria and Sudan in a way that preserves their unity. Further, they held talks on promoting pacification in the Horn of Africa, and empowering "neighboring states in the region" to cooperate for development.

On his side, President Erdogan pointed out that Egypt and Turkey had been deploying efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East and ceasefire in Gaza, and that they had been donating large amounts of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Hence, he asserted keenness on coordination and consultation with Egypt on regional crises, especially those in Libya and Sudan.

The Turkish president equally condemned massacres committed by Israel in Gaza stressing that "world countries must stand on the right side of history."

 

President Sisi and President Erdogan signed the joint statement on the first meeting of the Egyptian-Turkish High-Profile Strategic Cooperation Council they had chaired Wednesday in Ankara.

President Sisi was received by his Turkish counterpart in the airport where an official ceremony took place. The Egyptian chief of state expressed - on his social media accounts - great pleasure in visiting Turkey for the first time, saying “my visit to Turkey today reflects a joint willpower to start a new phase of friendship and cooperation.”
