Egyptian, Greek FMs discuss enhancement of ties, regional issues

CAIRO – 31 August 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, conducted a phone call on Friday evening, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, George Gerapetritis.

 

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Director of the Public Diplomacy Department, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that the call was made in light of the special historical ties binding the two countries, the keenness to follow up on joint projects between the two countries and coordination regarding regional issues of common interest.

 

Minister Abdelatty affirmed to his Greek counterpart the close bilateral relations and Egypt's aspiration to strengthen and bolster them in all fields, Abu Zeid added. The relations are currently witnessing a qualitative leap politically and economically.

 

Ambassador Abu Zeid added that Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of consolidating economic cooperation between Egypt and Greece, especially in trade and investment, and exploring further prospects for cooperation in other files, such as the labor file.

 

 Abdelatty also emphasized Egypt’s commitment to cooperating within the framework of the tripartite cooperation mechanism with Cyprus, which has become a role model as an integrated regional cooperation to confront the growing regional challenges in the Mediterranean.

 

The Spokesperson added that the call tackled the grave rapid developments witnessed in the region and the importance of seeking to intensify efforts to avoid the escalation of violence and instability in the region.

 

 Abdelatty briefed his Greek counterpart on the contacts that Egypt is conducting with many countries in the region, the United States and a number of European countries, in order to endeavor towards containing the current state of tension and escalation.

 

On his part, the Greek Foreign Minister commended the deep-rooted relations between the two countries, expressing his aspiration to continue bolstering strategic relations between Egypt and Greece at both the bilateral and regional levels.

 

He hailed Egypt's efforts at the political and humanitarian levels aimed at resolving the successive crises in the Middle East, as well as the role played by Egypt as a pillar of security and stability in the region, appreciating the intensive contacts conducted by the Foreign Minister and Egypt's unremitting efforts to contain tension in the region.

 

At the end of the call, the two ministers agreed to continue consultation and coordination in favor of the two countries and the region’s peoples.
