CAIRO – 28 August 2024: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a statement calling for $87.4 million to combat the ongoing monkeypox outbreak.
The funds, which will be used over the next six months from September 2024 to February 2025, will support global efforts to contain the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
The WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern on August 14th, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated international action. The requested funds will be used to implement the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP), which was issued on August 26th.
This comprehensive plan outlines the WHO's strategy for addressing the monkeypox outbreak, focusing on surveillance, research, equitable access to medical countermeasures, and community engagement.
The funds will be allocated to the WHO headquarters and regional and country offices to support coordination, provide technical assistance, operate field operations, and deliver medical supplies.
The WHO is urging donors to fully fund the response to the monkeypox outbreak to prevent further spread and protect those at highest risk.
