CAIRO – 28 August 2024: Egypt expressed Tuesday condolences to Sudan on the victims of the collapse of Arbaat Dam – whose capacity is 25 million cubic meters - located northwestern the country in the Red Sea state due to heavy rains, expressing readiness to provide any type of assistance needed.

The catastrophe, which occurred on Monday, incurred the death of at least 60, destruction of 20 villages, damages in 50 others, and displacement of at least 50,000. Further, hundreds are either lost or injured. A major factor behind the collapse is that the dam has not been maintained since 2017.

Civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, causing the internal displacement of 10 million, the largest in the world, and the fleeing of two million to neighboring states, mainly Egypt and Chad. The country is at risk of famine and experiencing tough humanitarian conditions.
