CAIRO – 22 August 2024: The Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayeb stated that education is crucial for reinforcing the religious and cultural identity of the youth.

He added – in a meeting with Minister of Education and Technical Education Mohamed Abdel Latif- that education serves as a protective barrier against the dangers of extremist ideologies and cultural invasions that seek to undermine the society’s values and morals.

Education also helps guard against the normalization of harmful societal behaviors, such as homosexuality and sexual relations outside the institution of marriage, which are inconsistent with sound human nature, the Grand Imam continued.

Sheikh Al Tayeb noted that education in the Arab world must maintain its unique character and independence, aligning with the nation’s aspirations and expectations. This approach will foster a generation of youth capable of leading in the future, he said.

The Al Azhar Grand Imam emphasized the risks of embracing "modern educational systems and methods" that may covertly aim to erode the Arab and religious identity. He highlighted the importance of being vigilant against attempts to subvert Arab education for cultural invasion agendas. He called for schools to reclaim their esteemed role, ensuring curricula foster the development of youth who uphold religious and moral values.

The Grand Imam warned against dramatic works that seek to undermine the value of knowledge and the teacher. He stated there should be an environment that respects and values teachers, presenting them as role models to students and society, encouraging their dedication, and defending them against mockery or disrespect. This can only be achieved through a sustainable initiative that fosters role models who inspire and positively influence the youth.”

Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif expressed his appreciation for the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar’s significant efforts in promoting true Islamic teachings and his gratitude for Al-Azhar Al-Sharif’s thousand-year legacy of upholding values and morals.

He highlighted the ministry's comprehensive plan to encourage students' return to schools and deliver effective educational services that prepare them for future careers.

He also emphasized the need to integrate values and morals into curricula through innovative methods to translate them into practical societal behaviors.

Additionally, the Minister noted the ministry's goal to enhance collaboration with Al-Azhar in combating extremism and promoting core values such as honesty, loyalty, and respect for parents, by involving Al-Azhar scholars in workshops and presenting content in a modern, accessible format for various age groups.
