CAIRO – 21 August 2024: Lebanese Agriculture Minister Abbas al-Haj Hassan has called for increased support from Egypt and other Arab nations to rebuild Lebanon's agricultural infrastructure, which has been significantly damaged by the ongoing conflict with Israel.
In an interview with al-Qahera News Channel, Hassan highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict on Lebanon's agricultural sector, particularly in the southern regions. He emphasized that agriculture contributes approximately 20% to Lebanon's GDP and is a vital part of the national economy.
Hassan accused Israel of targeting Lebanon's agricultural sector as a means to undermine the country's economy. He stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the conflict once hostilities cease.
The minister expressed optimism about the potential for increased cooperation with Egypt in the field of aquaculture. He noted that the existing partnership between the two countries in this sector is strong and that there are plans for further collaboration. Hassan also mentioned the role of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and the Arab League in supporting agricultural development in the region.
Looking ahead, Hassan announced that a group of Lebanese experts will be traveling to Alexandria, Egypt, to participate in a training program organized by the Arab League in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture. The program aims to enhance the capacity of agricultural professionals from across the Mediterranean region.
