CAIRO – 19 August 2024: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasized that the ongoing talks in Cairo and Doha "could be the last opportunity to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas."

According to the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post, Blinken made these remarks on Monday before meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

He stated, "Washington is working to ensure that there is no regional escalation amid fears of a potential attack by Iran on Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31."

Blinken arrived in Israel yesterday, aiming to ramp up diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire agreement in Gaza by next week.

A senior U.S. State Department official reported that this marks Blinken's tenth visit to the region since the war in Gaza began in October. During his visit today, Blinken is scheduled to meet with top Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
