CAIRO – 18 August 2024: Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development Affairs Khaled Abdel Ghaffar has relieved the director of the health affairs directorate in Giza of his duties following an incident that resulted in the death of a patient in an elevator.

The tragedy unfolded as the patient was being transported by the elevator at Shabramant Central Hospital after undergoing joint surgery, as stated by Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, during TV remarks on Saturday.

He explained that a sudden movement of the elevator trapped part of the patient's body inside and the other part outside, ultimately leading to her demise.

The minister has directed appropriate disciplinary measures against any individuals found negligent in their responsibilities, aligning with the ongoing investigations being carried out by the Public Prosecution.

Furthermore, he has mandated a comprehensive review of all maintenance contracts for elevators and essential equipment in coordination with relevant authorities, with a deadline set for presenting a detailed report within a week.

The minister has assigned the deputy director of the Giza health affairs directorate to oversee operations temporarily.

The ministry's spokesperson extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased's family, affirming that the prosecution is conducting a criminal probe into the incident.

He added that the investigations will ascertain whether the elevator malfunctioned due to a technical fault or human error.

The spokesperson reiterated the ministry's commitment to fully support the judicial investigative authorities in determining accountability for this tragic occurrence.
