CAIRO – 11 August 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs Badr Abdelatty has arrived in Kigali to participate in the inauguration of Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Sunday.
Numerous heads of state have gathered in the Rwandan capital to witness the inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place at Amahoro Stadium and expected to host around 40,000 attendees.
Kagame, who has been in office since April 2000, secured his re-election in July with an overwhelming 99.18% of the vote, as reported by the National Electoral Commission, marking his fourth term in office.
His opponents, Frank Habineza from the Democratic Green Party, and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, have both conceded their defeat.
During his visit to Kigali, Abdelatty paid respects at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and its museum, dedicated to honoring the memory of the genocide that Rwanda endured in 1994.
There, Abdelatty laid a wreath of flowers, left a message in the visitors’ book, and expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.
He also delivered a speech highlighting the inspiration drawn by Rwanda’s success in enhancing tolerance and the resilience showed by the Rwandan people in their journey towards peace, stability and prosperity.
The foreign minister also met with the Egyptian cardiac surgery pioneer Sir Magdi Yacoub. Both are slated to attend an event commemorating the completion of the initial phase of the Magdi Yacoub Center Rwanda – Egypt for Cardiac Surgery.
