CAIRO - 3 August 2024: 12 newborns in incubators and 10 intensive care unit patients were evacuated from Sadat Central Hospital in northern Egypt's Menoufia following a fire outbreak on Saturday.
Civil protection units successfully brought the fire under control, with no reported casualties, the governorate said in a statement.
The patients were relocated due to lingering fumes. The newborns were transferred to Harpur Memorial Hospital, while the ICU cases were moved to Sadat Specialized Hospital.
According to the official statement, all patients are in stable condition.
Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered evacuating the entire hospital, ensuring patients were transferred to nearby facilities based on their medical needs.
The minister delegated his deputy, Mohamed El-Tayeb, to oversee the evacuations and guarantee that patients receive necessary medical attention at their new locations.
The Ministry of Health has indicated that the fire originated in a supplies warehouse within the hospital premises.
Abdel Ghaffar has instructed for full support to investigative authorities to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents within the healthcare sector.
While the official cause of the fire remains undisclosed, a source cited by the Masrawy news website suggests that an electrical short circuit could be the likely trigger for the incident.
