Egypt’s FM, Irish counterpart discuss bilateral ties, Israeli war on Gaza

CAIRO – 1 August 2024: During a phone with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Micheál Martin, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty discussed the bilateral relations between the two sides and ongoing regional escalation.

During the call, Minister Martin extended his congratulations to Minister Abdel Aati on his new position.

In a statement, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman and Director of the Public Diplomacy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, noted that Minister Abdel-Aty expressed his gratitude for the Irish Minister's call.

Minister Abdel-Aty emphasized his desire to work closely with the Irish side to strengthen bilateral relations and collaborate on regional and international issues of mutual interest. This includes addressing Middle East issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, given Ireland’s supportive stance.

The spokesman further highlighted that Minister Abdel-Aty underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, especially renewable energy. He expressed a commitment to advancing trade relations and boosting Egyptian exports to Ireland.

He continued that Egypt looks forward to continued Irish support within the European Union framework, particularly in advancing the relationship between Egypt and the EU to a comprehensive and strategic partnership.

The conversation also addressed the Palestinian issue. Minister Abdel-Aty praised Ireland’s supportive stance on Palestinian rights, especially following Ireland’s recognition of the Palestinian state. He welcomed Ireland’s efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and ensure humanitarian access for civilians. Minister Abdel-Aty also noted Egypt’s ongoing efforts with the United States and the conflict parties to secure a ceasefire and release hostages, stressing the urgency of preventing the conflict from spreading further.

In response, the Irish Foreign Minister highlighted the special relationship between Ireland and Egypt and reaffirmed his country’s support for Egypt’s development and commitment to economic cooperation and investment. He expressed concern over the potential expansion of the conflict in the region due to recent escalations in Lebanon and reaffirmed Ireland’s support for UNRWA’s vital role.

At the end of the call, both ministers agreed to maintain regular consultations and coordination to address the escalating crises and to strengthen bilateral relations for the benefit of both the Egyptian and Irish peoples.
