CAIRO – 1 August 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdel-Aty met with Tom Perriello, the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Wednesday.

 

Abdel-Aty emphasized the importance of consultation and coordination between Egypt and the United States in addressing the crisis in Sudan, said Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid in a statement.

 

The Foreign Minister outlined Egypt’s significant efforts to restore security and stability in Sudan, including its initiative to engage Sudanese political and civil forces.

 

Abdel-Aty also stressed the need to maintain Sudanese state institutions, provide relief and humanitarian aid to Sudan and its neighboring countries, and ensure that the Sudanese people retain ownership of the political process.

 

The spokesman added that the two parties discussed regional and international efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in Sudan and to enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid.

 

They also addressed the proposal for talks in Switzerland between the conflicting parties and expressed Egypt’s appreciation for its invitation to participate in these discussions.

 

Both sides expressed hope that these efforts would lead to significant progress and ultimately end the suffering of the Sudanese people.

 

Dr. Abdel-Aty underscored the importance of expediting the fulfillment of pledges to support Sudan and its neighboring countries receiving Sudanese refugees, as committed in relevant international conferences.

 

In response, the U.S. envoy to Sudan acknowledged and appreciated Egypt’s extensive efforts to mitigate the crisis, including facilitating dialogue among Sudanese political forces and hosting hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict.

 

He expressed the U.S.'s commitment to continue coordinating and consulting with Egypt to end the war and restore security and stability in Sudan as soon as possible.
