Human trafficking is a crime involving the exploitation of someone for the purposes of involuntary labor or a commercial sex act through the use of force, fraud or coercion.
CAIRO - 30 July 2024: Egypt joined the global community on July 30, 2024, in commemorating World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The United Nations designated this day to raise awareness of human trafficking, a heinous crime that undermines human dignity and threatens societies worldwide.
Egypt's theme for this year's commemoration is "Leaving No Child Behind," recognizing children as the most vulnerable group targeted by traffickers and emphasizing the need for specialized protection and care.
Recognizing the severity of human trafficking, Egypt has enacted comprehensive legislation and established dedicated mechanisms to combat this crime. Law No. 64 of 2010 criminalizes human trafficking, and the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking—the first of its kind in the Middle East—was established to coordinate efforts among various government agencies.
This committee, comprising 30 ministries and national bodies, works to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute perpetrators.
Egypt has also launched three national strategies to combat human trafficking, with the latest one focusing on protection, prosecution, prevention, and partnerships. Additionally, a national referral mechanism has been established to provide legal, medical, psychological, and rehabilitation services to victims.
To raise public awareness, Egypt conducted a comprehensive media campaign from May 2019 to January 2023 under the slogan "Together Against Human Trafficking." The campaign aimed to inform the public about the nature of human trafficking, the penalties for traffickers, and the services available to victims. It also encouraged citizens to report suspected cases of trafficking.
Egypt actively participates in international and regional efforts to combat human trafficking. The country recently hosted a meeting of Arab experts to discuss combating trafficking in accordance with Islamic principles, demonstrating Egypt's commitment to a comprehensive approach to this issue.
