CAIRO - 28 July 2024: The Hepatitis C elimination program has been completed and the transitional phase reports on the program's impact and indicators until 2025 are being prepared, according to the Ministry of Health.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said Sunday the infection rate reached 9 cases per 10,000 new cases annually, and similar levels of deaths resulting from the viral hepatitis.

Egypt has become the first country in the world to obtain the golden class status due to the completion of the Hepatitis C elimination process - an important milestone towards the goal of achieving the complete elimination of the disease before 2030, Abdel Ghaffar said.

This is an amazing transformation give that Egypt had one of the highest rates of Hepatitis C infection in the world less than 10 years ago, he added.

“We are approaching the ultimate goal of eliminating hepatitis C with less than 5 infections per 100,000 new cases annually and similar levels of deaths from the viral hepatitis, the spokesperson highlighted.

He explained that 118,208 patients with liver cirrhosis were included in the early detection and treatment of liver cancer initiative within two years of the initiative’s launch in March 2022, which contributes to preventing them from developing liver cancer.
