CAIRO – 21 July 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expats met Sunday with AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) Bankole Adeoye on the sidelines of the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.

Minister Abdel Aty showcased that the increasing security challenges and human suffering as well as the expansion of the scope of conflicts mandate more consultations between the AU's agencies and member states. In that framework, he underlined Egypt's readiness to consolidate the peace structure and stability pillars on the continent through its membership in the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC).

The minister displayed the main features of the programme of Egypt's chairmanship of the council in October 2024 and the events that it plans to hold. He also expressed hope to put into force the capabilities of the AU Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) launched in 2021, given the multiple crises endured by the continent.

The two sides equally discussed the political and security developments in Sudan, agreeing on the importance of unifying Sudanese political civil powers, and preserving Sudan's territorial integrity and state institutions.

The Egyptian minister also welcomed the PSC's decision to approve the request of the Somalian government to extend the work of the third phase of ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia).

They equally discussed the issues of the Great Lakes and Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as well as the security challenges in the Red Sea and updates in the Horn of Africa.
