CAIRO – 9 June 2024: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has traveled to Nizhny Novgorod city of Russia to participate in the Meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers, scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday, 10-11 June.

Shoukry will deliver speeches during two sessions of the meeting, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

The first session will focus on cooperation within BRICS, as well as international and regional issues, while the second session will discuss collaboration formulas with partner countries.

In addition to his engagement in the sessions, Shoukry will hold bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of the participating countries to explore ways to enhance relations and cooperation.

During these bilateral meetings, Shoukry and his counterparts will also discuss pressing international and regional issues, including the ongoing war in Gaza and efforts to enhance humanitarian access to the enclave.

Egypt officially became a member of the BRICS bloc of major emerging economies in January, joining the founding members: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates also became members at the same time.

Russia is currently chairing the alliance, with a focus on promoting political, security, economic, financial, cultural, and humanitarian collaboration among member states.

In late January, Egypt participated in the BRICS sherpa and sous-sherpa meeting in Moscow, marking its first full member participation in BRICS meetings.

Through its membership in BRICS, Egypt aims to enhance mutual trade with other member countries, including China, Russia and India.

Egypt also seeks to attract new investments and promote trade using the national currencies of member states to mitigate the impact of exchange rate fluctuations.
