CAIRO – 4 June 2024: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Tuesday received a phone call from UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, as they discussed the latest developments in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

During the phone conversation, the two ministers mulled a proposal put forward by US President Joe Biden to secure a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave and conduct a prisoner-hostage swap.

The pair also probed mediation efforts made by Egypt, Qatar and the US to encourage Israel and Hamas to agree on this proposal to end the humanitarian crisis in the Strip, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Shoukry stressed Egypt's support for all endeavors aimed at stopping the Israeli war and guaranteeing full and unhindered access of humanitarian aid for Gazans, as well as ensuring the complete withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the Gaza Strip and the safe return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.

The spokesman noted that the two top diplomats explored the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, with Shoukry reiterating the necessity of pressuring Israel to abide by its legal obligations as being the occupying power, stop its military operations in the Palestinian enclave, including in Rafah city, and open all land crossings, in addition to providing safe working conditions for international relief agencies.

Shoukry and Cameron agreed to continue close coordination and consultation to advance the efforts for achieving a ceasefire and addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave
