According to El País, the Spanish Prime Minister welcomed Foreign Minister Samah Shoukry at the Moncloa Palace on Monday, where Shoukry conveyed his appreciation for Spain's efforts "to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of prisoners."
Sanchez highlighted Spain's recognition of the Palestinian state, a decision made, as he explained to the Foreign Minister, "with the aim of contributing to peace and seeking justice."
Following his meeting with Shoukry, Sanchez posted on social media platform X: "We continue to work together to achieve peace and security in the Middle East."
Last week, Sanchez also met with other members of the Arab Contact Group on Gaza in Madrid, of which Egypt is a part. The meeting occurred a day after Spain's formal recognition of the State of Palestine.
In the meeting, according to La Moncloa, Sanchez and Shoukry agreed that the step taken "could encourage countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to start the process to do so." Both parties concurred that lasting peace can only be achieved through a two-state solution.
Shoukry stated, "We look forward to resolving the Palestinian issue based on a two-state solution and establishing the Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital."
