CAIRO – May 31, 2024: Egypt’s churches will celebrate the feast commemorating the Holy Family’s arrival in Egypt on Saturday, corresponding to June 1.
Fleeing the oppression of King Herod, who targeted Christianity and sought to harm Christ and his mother, the Virgin Mary, they embarked on a holy and challenging journey fraught with pain and hardship until they reached Egypt, where they resided for approximately three years.
The places they lodged in have since been transformed into churches and monasteries.
According to the official website of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the journey commenced from Palestine, traversing hills and deserts to Egypt, avoiding recognized roads at the time due to King Herod's pursuit. Their journey brought them to the borders of Egypt in their initial stop.
Their path led them through the city of Al-Farma, where they traveled from Bethlehem to Gaza, then to the Zaranik Protectorate, situated 37 km west of Al-Arish.
They entered Egypt from the northern side of Al-Farma city, positioned between El-Arish and Port Said.
