CAIRO – 23 May 2024: Egypt’s Al-Azhar welcomed on Thursday the announcement of Norway, Ireland and Spain to officially recognize the Palestinian state.
In a statement, al Azhar encouraged the rest of the countries to take similar steps to support the Palestinian right, recognize the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to independence, freedom, and to live safely on their land like other peoples.
On May 22, Norway, Ireland and Spain have recognized a Palestinian state in a historic move, the Associated Press said.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said on Wednesday it was coordinated with Spain and Norway, “an historic and important day for ... Palestine.”
Several other European countries have in the past weeks indicated that they plan to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.
