Egypt's FM to visit Greece for enhancing relations, discussions on Gaza war resolution efforts

CAIRO – 19 May 2024: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will travel to Greece on Sunday to strengthen Egyptian-Greek relations and engage in discussions on regional and global matters, especially efforts to resolve the ongoing Gaza war.

According to Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesperson for Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Shoukry's visit to Greece reaffirms the strategic ties between the two countries.

It also underscores the mutual commitment of Egypt and Greece to further enhance their robust and growing relationship, he added.

During his visit, Shoukry will hold extensive discussions with Georgios Gerapetritis, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, to monitor the progress and bolster the bilateral cooperation program.

The foreign ministers will also engage in political consultations on critical issues, particularly the developments in the Middle East.

Additionally, Shoukry will meet with Dimitris Copelouzos, the Chairman of the Greek Copelouzos Group, to assess the advancements in the implementation of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece.

Shoukry's visit will also include meetings with Greek media representatives.

Egypt and Greece enjoy strong bilateral relations, particularly in the political and economic domains, and collaborate on joint development initiatives at both the bilateral and trilateral levels with Cyprus.

The Egyptian-Greek electrical interconnection project stands out among these endeavors and is poised to connect Egypt and Europe via Greece, enabling the transmission of substantial amounts of green energy.

 

The project, known as GREGY, aims to establish a 3,000 MW submarine cable spanning about 950 km, facilitating the exchange of green and cost-effective energy.

The Copelouzos Group is responsible for constructing and operating the renewable energy sources in Egypt generating 9.5 GW of power.

The project is projected to annually substitute 4.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas and reduce carbon emissions by around 10 million tonnes per year, as stated by the Copelouzos Group.
