CAIRO – 18 May 2024: Egypt's statistical agency CAPMAS has reported a significant 24.5% decrease in road accident fatalities in 2023, while injuries related to road accidents saw a notable increase of 27%.
According to CAPMAS's annual bulletin released on Saturday, the number of road accident injuries rose from 55,991 in 2022 to 71,016 in 2023.
Among the governorates, Dakahlia recorded the highest number of car crash injuries with 14,192, while Ismailia had the lowest with 170 injuries.
Males accounted for the majority of the injured, with 57,198 males compared to 13,531 females.
The age group of 15 years and below had the highest number of injuries, followed by the age group below 25, while the least injuries were reported among those above 65 years of age.
Fatalities decline
Meanwhile, road accident fatalities decreased from 7,762 in 2022 to 5,861 in 2023.
Cairo, with a population of over 10.3 million people, recorded the highest number of road accident fatalities among Egypt's 27 governorates, with 718 deaths in 2023.
North Sinai, with a population of around 450,000, had the lowest number of fatalities, with only 18 deaths.
Similar to injuries, males accounted for the majority of road crash deaths, with 4,902 males compared to 959 females.
The age group of 15 years and below constituted the highest number of victims, followed by those below 35 years of age, while the lowest number of victims were under 5 years of age.
Train accidents drop
In a positive development, train accidents witnessed an impressive decline of 78.2%, dropping from 831 accidents in the previous year to 181 accidents in 2023.
The total number of casualties from train accidents reached 694 fatalities and 686 injuries.
Ongoing development
Over the past decade, Egypt has made significant efforts to develop its road network, constructing thousands of kilometers of roads across the nation.
In 2022, the Ministry of Transport announced that Egypt had built about 5,500 km of roads since 2014, as part of the country's objective to construct 7,000 km of highways.
Additionally, the Egyptian government has implemented substantial initiatives to upgrade the railway system, including the establishment of a modern signaling system and the replacement of numerous outdated train carriages.
