Egypt joins top cancer research agency IARC

CAIRO - 16 May 2024: Egypt has joined the group of member states of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) after years of promoting cancer research and prevention efforts. 

 

Egypt is now the 29th country joining the agency, said, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, adding that state-sponsored health initiatives such as “100 Million Health” have enhanced combating breast, liver and bladder cancer.

 

Cooperation between Egypt and IARC will include various initiatives, including the National Tumor Registry, expanding Egypt’s participation in international federations, and primary prevention research on modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, and smoking of all types.

 

More cooperation is also expected in capacity building, research on the causes of cancer, in addition to forming a code to combat cancer in the region.

 

In her speech, Dr. Elisabeth Wiederbas, Director of IARC, emphasized that Egypt’s membership is an important step towards strengthening global efforts in cancer research and prevention.

 

“We are excited to cooperate with Egypt in critical initiatives such as cancer registration and epidemiology, prevention research, and leveraging our shared expertise to advance cancer control and improve public health outcomes,” said Wiederbas.
