CAIRO – 2 May 2024: Germany handed over the chairmanship of the Khartoum Process to Egypt on April 17 in tandem with putting a plan to hold a series of activities, conventions, and workshops to exchange experience on migration management.

Assistant to Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Ihab Badawy commended, in his speech, the Khartoum Process for enabling dialogue and cooperation between the European Union on one side, and the countries of the Horn of Africa, North Africa, and East Africa on the other side.

The entity, also called the EU-Horn of Africa Migration Route Initiative, was founded in 2014, and now, has 36 member states. The duration of the chairmanship is one year.

The diplomat noted the importance of dealing with migration through a comprehensive approach, and the principle of sharing duties and responsibilities. That is in addition to leveraging migration in a way that contributes to development in origin, transit, and destination countries.
