CAIRO – 29 April 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry met Sunday and Monday with counterparts from the United Kingdom, Norway, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bahrain to discuss possible moves to end the war in Gaza Strip as well as bilateral cooperation.
Regarding the Gaza War, the minister stressed the salience of mediation efforts that mandate an immediate ceasefire, hostage swap deal, and sufficient supply of humanitarian aid to Palestinians. He also warned that the persistence of the armed conflict would worsen the escalation that had already ensued from the crisis, and that is taking place in the West Bank, southern Lebanon, and the Red Sea.
Minister Shokry told UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs David Cameron that he looked forward to a remarkable and active participation by British firms in the investment conference that will be organized by Egypt and the European Union in June.
The economic aspect also composed a significant part of the meeting of Minister Shokry and his Malaysian counterpart Mohamed Hassan as the former expressed aspiration that Malaysian investors benefit from opportunities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCzone), pointing out that Egypt's location qualifies it to be a regional center for export and trade.
The same focus on investment similarly took place during the minister's meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry as he highlighted the positive change in the business climate in Egypt over the past years and opportunities that Sri Lankan firms could seize.
In the meeting with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdel Latif Bin Rashid al-Zayani, the two sides conferred over the topics that would be discussed in the 33rd Arab Summit that will be hosted by the kingdom on May 16.
