CAIRO - 29 April 2024: The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population said that 2.5 million deaths around the world could be avoided annually if salt consumption was reduced to the recommended amount (less than 5 grams per day).
The Ministry of Health and Population advised maintaining health in order to protect against high blood pressure by reducing salt consumption.
Sodium plays a role in maintaining healthy nerves and muscles and helps keep fluid levels in the body properly balanced. Too much sodium can cause fluid retention, which can lead to high blood pressure, according to the ministry, adding that high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and heart failure
Doctors recommend people with heart failure also eat a low-sodium diet, and eating too much salt can cause fluid to build up around the heart and lungs, pushing the heart work harder.
Evidence suggests that a daily intake of 2,000 mg of sodium is a good goal for people with heart failure, especially if they also have high blood pressure.
