Egypt's New Rafah has carrying capacity of 75K: North Sinai governor

CAIRO – 25 April 2024: North Sinai Governor Mohamed Shousha stated in a TV interview on Wednesday that New Rafah was designed to be a fourth-generation city and that its carrying capacity was 75,000 individuals, which is the number of residents that had been evacuated from Egyptian Rafah during the war on terrorism.

 

The first phase consisted of 272 flat-buildings with the average number of units per building being 16. The apartments are fully finished and the surface area of each is 120 square meters. As for the second phase, it will comprise 276 buildings.

 

The Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities released Wednesday a statement – on the occasion of Sinai Liberation Day marking April 25 - displaying the developmental projects carried out over the past 10 years.

 

A total of 522 projects were implemented at a cost of LE46.7 billion. Those included the creation of seven Bedouin communities in South Sinai and 11 in North Sinai where four fishermen villages were introduced comprising 1,380 houses. The second phase of the project will consist of 17 Bedouin communities having a total of 950 houses. In North Sinai's Rafah and Sheikh Zowayed, there will be four communities encompassing 6,053 houses. 

 

In total, 17,000 residential units have been built at LE4.074 billion varying in type between Bedouin houses, and apartments in the categories of social housing, slum-alternative housing, and low-income housing.
