CAIRO – 21 April 2024: Since the outbreak of the civil war in Sudan on April 15, 2023, 8.2 million have been displaced, including 1.8 million who fled to neighboring states, particularly Chad and Egypt.
According to the UNHCR, over 500,000 crossed the borders into Egypt, majorly women and children. The commission's bureaus in Cairo and Alexandria receive daily 2,000-3,000 refugees who need assistance.
Since the beginning of 2024, the commission has registered almost 100,000. As such, the number of Sudanese refugees registered with the UNHCR has hit 300,000 - jumping five-fold - making the total of registred refugees of various nationalities 570,000.
Nevertheless, the number is expected to rise given that 2.3 million Sudanese are estimated to leave Sudan to neighboring states by the end of 2024.
The UNHCR pointed out that there was a drop in funding from major donors renewing its call for funds worth $175.1 million to fulfill the urgent needs of Sudanese refugees in Egypt.
Those would be directed to 27 partners targeting 500,000 refugees and members of the host communities with services in the fields of protection, education, food security, healthcare, basic needs, job creation, economic integration, housing, sanitation, access to water supply and wastewater networks.
Although the UNHCR's budget rose by 25 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, it is not compatible with the spike in refugee numbers.
