CAIRO – 5 April 2024: Taha Mohamed, a 30-year-old father of two children, has tragically passed away after being trapped in a deep groundwater well in Minya, Upper Egypt, since Tuesday.

Rescue operations, spanning long hours, were tirelessly carried out since that day. Sadly, his life was claimed by the somber depths before he could be rescued.

The current focus of the operations is centered on excavating a tunnel around the well to reach its base and retrieve Taha's body.

According to information provided by the governorate, Taha was walking near a farm where he worked in Azaqa village, western Minya, when his foot slipped and he fell deep into the gloomy 25-meter deep well.

The governorate reported that a land rescue team from the Civil Protection department, equipped with loaders, an excavator, a crane, and a power generator, is stationed at the scene, exerting tremendous efforts to extract Taha's body.

After Taha fell into the well, his relatives attempted a rescue by using a rope, which bore his weight for a few meters before it was cut, causing him to fall once again.

There was a glimmer of hope when Taha remained conscious, but it was only a matter of time before his voice faded away, and those around him were certain of his passing.

Out of concern for her fragile health condition, Taha's acquaintances have refrained from informing his mother about the tragic news.

This incident brings to mind the heart-wrenching story of Rayan, the five-year-old Moroccan boy who lost his life after being trapped in a well near the city of Chefchaouen for four days in 2022, despite the colossal rescue efforts made.

The stories of Rayan and other similar incidents worldwide have evoked a profound sense of grief, much like Taha's story.
