CAIRO – 4 April 2024: The Giza Criminal Court has sentenced the first convict found guilty of killing Yemeni military leader, Major General Hassan al-Obaidi, in his residence in Giza’s Boulaq al-Dakrur to death.
Meanwhile, the court handed down a life sentence to the second defendant, a 15-year prison sentence to the third defendant, and the fourth and fifth defendants were acquitted of all charges.
Egypt launched an investigation into the killing of the Yemeni military official. On February 19, 2024, the Ministry of Interior announced that security forces had apprehended suspects accused of murdering the Yemeni citizen in Giza within 24 hours of the incident.
Following an investigation, the police identified the perpetrators responsible for the official’s death and the theft of money, foreign currency, personal belongings, and a rented car near the scene of the incident.
The identified criminals include Ramadan Muhammad, 29, with a history of previous crimes; Abdul Rahman Ashraf Shehata Mustafa, 19; Israa Saber Mohamed, 22, a housewife; and Suheir Abdel Halim Muhammad, 17, also a housewife.
During police interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing that they had attempted to incapacitate the victim by putting sleeping pills in his drink to facilitate the entry of accomplices into his apartment for robbery. However, the victim remained conscious and resisted, resulting in his murder. The perpetrators then fled after stealing from him.
All stolen items were recovered by the police, and appropriate legal measures were taken by the Public Prosecution.
