CAIRO – 1 April 2024: Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and St. Mark Diocese greeted on Monday Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb on the occasion of Eid al Fitr.
Pope Tawadros, accompanied by a church delegation, visited the headquarters of Al Azhar in Cairo. He was received by the Grand Imam and the leaders of the Sheikhdom and Al-Azhar University.
He wished the Grand Imam and all Egyptian Muslims peace and prosperity.
For his part, Tayyeb thanked the Pope, expressing his appreciation for this visit, stressing the inherent love and brotherhood among all Egyptians.
“Welcome to Al-Azhar, and we thank you for your kind feelings, and we appreciate this visit, which reflects the relationship of friendship and brotherhood that brings us Egyptians together. Muslims and Christians, and confirms the depth of our relations and our cohesion in one national fabric.” Tayyeb said.
He added that he feels sorrow for the same time for ‘brothers and sisters in Gaza strip’, as Eid al Fitr approaches and they are still suffering from the Israeli aggression.
Al Azhar Grand Imam also shed light on the ‘pivotal role’ of the ‘The Egyptian Family House’ in preserving the Egyptian societal fabric. He also described it as one of the ‘fruits of cooperation between Al-Azhar and the Egyptian churches’, to eliminating extremist thought.
