CAIRO – 13 March 2024: Chairperson of the National Council for Women [NCW] Maya Morsi asserted the Egyptian government adopted an ambitious program for economic reform along with social protection policies, according to a statement by the council.
Morsi's remarks were made in an address to the 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), currently in session in New York city on Wednesday.
She added the political leadership has a genuine determination and believes that empowerment of women is a national duty, said the note.
On the women’s situation in Gaza Strip Morsi wondered, “How do we discuss the empowerment of women and girls and confronting poverty at a time when our meeting today coincides with the passage of more than 157 full days since the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.”
She added: “We discuss the future and Palestinian women have a choice at every moment between death or the martyrdom of their loved ones or forced displacement.
Today we are talking about empowering women and girls and confronting poverty and a loaf of bread in the Gaza Strip has become a luxury and the water drop became aid.”
Morsi called on the United Nations to stop the aggression on Gaza and demand an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.
CSW68 is the UN’s largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The event started proceedings on March 11 and will last until March 22 under the priority theme, "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective".
